The roots of Iittala date back to 1881 when a glass factory was established in a village of the same name in southern Finland. In the beginning of the 20th century dinnerware was decorated with a variety of ornaments. Iittala was one of the first companies to make the transition from decorative dinner sets to functional, aesthetically pleasing objects infused with progressive Scandinavian design. The core idea behind Iittala is to offer aesthetically and functionally durable products that bring enjoyment and pleasure to everyday life.
Matti Klenell is a Swedish designer, who has become known for his innovative take on the Scandinavian idea of the intrinsic link between form and function. Klenell likes to see every project as a unique journey, and the colourful birds he has created for Iittala make the most of the skills of the Nuutajärvi Glass works. Glass is a familiar material to Klenell and one in which he excels, as his exhibition of unique glass pieces in Stockholm in 2008 showed. Despite his youth, Matti Klenell has already made quite a name for himself, winning the prestigious Ljunggren Design Prize in 2003.
