Logo: Exploring Silver; Form Pattern & Texture - 6th July to 3rd October 2019.

This special exhibition of rarely seen silverwork from The Sheffield Assay Office collection is a unique opportunity to see work by some of the finest silversmiths of their generations.

Exploring Silver comprises specially selected objects from the Assay Office’s own collection, all chosen due to their uniquely interesting forms, patterns and textures typical of their eras. With exhibits ranging from the 1930s to the present day, each object on display is a fine example of virtuoso design and craftsmanship with all proudly bearing the famous Sheffield hallmark.

‘My father David Mellor grew up in Sheffield in the 1930s and studied here for the next two decades. Although he was a convinced modernist he never lost his respect for the great traditions of Sheffield metalworking. This special exhibition contains pieces from several people David knew and worked with, for instance Jack Spencer, a highly skilled employee in my father’s early workshop in Park Lane.’
